Did Arya Stark fulfill Melisandre’s Green Eyes prophecy?

Lots of Game of Thrones fans were expecting Arya Stark to be the one to silence green-eyed Cersei Lannister based on Melisandre’s prophecy, but what if we all got it wrong?

Some Game of Thrones fans think Arya actually died in last week's episode

Game of Thrones might have long ended, however, there are parts of the show that still pose a mystery to fans. Notable among these mysteries are the various prophecies spread across the show. GOT is a show packed with tons of visions, dreams and prophecies and while the majority of them ended up getting fulfilled, some were utterly ignored. Various criticisms attribute these obvious omissions to terrible writing. A few others are of the opinion that the loopholes are a result of the rushed ending to the GoT series.

One of the prophecies that generates a lot of controversy to this day is Melisandre’s green eye prophecy for Arya Stark. In season 3 of the show, when Melisandre meets Arya for the first time, the Red Priestess makes a weighty revelation. Melisandre told Arya: “I see a darkness in you, and in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes, eyes you’ll shut forever. We will meet again”.

They did meet again, at the Battle of Winterfell, where Melisandre repeated the prophecy. This time around, the Red Priestess placed emphasis on the blue eyes belonging to the Night King. But, there are still question marks surrounding the identities of the brown and green eyes.

Walder Frey is Arya’s biggest victim with brown eyes, but the green-eyed kill remains a major bone of contention. The obvious choice would have been Cersei Lannister, but Arya had absolutely nothing to do with her death. However, one major character death directly involving Arya that somewhat manages to go under the radar every time is Littlefinger’s.

Here’s that moment…

Arya slit Littlefinger’s throat in the final episode of season 7 in a move that reunited the Stark siblings, and brought about some validity to Melisandre’s prophecy. In the GoT books, Littlefinger is said to have “laughing green-grey eyes, just like a cat.”

However, to accept that Littlefinger was the green eyes Arya was prophesied to slay means a slight alteration in Melisandre’s prophecy. The Red Priestess predicts Arya will shut ‘brown eyes first, followed by blue eyes and green eyes’. But if Littlefinger were to be the green-eyed victim, the order of kill would change to become ‘brown eyes, green eyes, and blue eyes’. Paying much attention to this arrangement is like trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. But, it becomes even more serious when you consider the fact that Melisandre repeated the prophecy in the exact same order as she did the first time when she met Arya again. It’s a stretch, but we’ll take it like that.

Arya is one of the deadliest killers on the Game of Thrones, and Walder Frey, Littlefinger and the Night King are just a few of her victims during the course of the show. It is quite possible that some of her other victims had green eyes, but none of them were on screen long enough for us to determine the colour of their eyes.

On the other hand, it is possible that Melisandre’s prophecy was simply referring to Arya’s evolution from a pesky tomboy to a deadly assassin, one which most definitely came to pass. The Red Priestess’ use of eye colours in this context would simply refer to the fact that Arya was going to kill lots of people.
