Twitter Uses Facts To Shutdown Trump Over False Abortion Claims

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Monday to rail against Democratic senators who had shut down a bill that would punish any doctor who failed to provide medical care to infants born alive after a failed abortion.

“Senate Democrats just voted against legislation to prevent the killing of newborn infant children,” Trump falsely claimed. “The Democrat position on abortion is now so extreme that they don’t mind executing babies AFTER birth.”

“This will be remembered as one of the most shocking votes in the history of Congress,” he continued in a subsequent tweet. “If there is one thing we should all agree on, it’s protecting the lives of innocent babies.”

Senate Democrats blocked the measure to move forward with the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act on Monday. Sponsored by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), the measure fell short of the 60 votes it needed to advance, with 53 senators voting in support and 44 voting against.

The bill would require doctors to “exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child” they would to “any other child born alive at the same gestational age.”

Detractors of the bill say it would “criminalize doctors” and open them up to lawsuits—those who failed to comply with the requirements would face up to five years in prison—and that it was “unnecessary since laws already exist to protect an infant in the extremely unlikely scenario of a birth after an abortion attempt,” according to Vox.

Many on Twitter say the president’s statements are not only false and intentionally misleading, but work to incite violence against reproductive rights advocates and healthcare providers.

The topic of late-term abortion became a talking point last month after a Democratic-backed bill in Virginia’s state legislature proposed to loosen restrictions on late-term abortions in cases where the mother’s health is threatened.

It has seemingly overnight become part of a larger pro-choice/pro-life debate that will undoubtedly play a role in the the 2020 election.
